On the road together, Giuseppe Haas-Triverio & M. C. Escher. From March 24 – August 18, 2024.

Giuseppe Haas-Triverio, the most important Obwalden artist of his time, has now almost fallen into oblivion. For almost three decades,he lived and worked in Rome. Fascinated by the Mediterranean landscape, between 1929 and 1935 he undertook various study trips through Italy and Corsica — always accompanied by his Dutch artist friend, M.C. Escher. The diary entries, the drawings, and the resulting prints capture a moment in time in which the two before they later developed in other directions. While Haas-Triverio, after his return to Sachseln, is increasingly co-opted by local clients and lost its international presence, his companion Escher gained more and more recognition — until towards the end of the1950s with its metamorphoses and seemingly absurd perspectives gained worldwide popularity that continues to this day. On the road together is showing for the first time a wide selection of drawings, woodcuts and lithographs, which are based on the five joint study trips through Abruzzo, Calabria, Corsica, and Sicily. The direct, fascinating comparison between the works of Haas-Triverio and those of Escher, who often stand shoulder to shoulder in front of the same motif reveals both the artistic similarities and differences.
