ESSAY ON ROAD SAFETY

introduction

Traffic rules and regulations are formulated to regulate traffic, for the safety and convenience. They are very essential to ensure safety on road as well as their users . Some rules are formulated for specific types of users for example it is mandatory to slow down while approaching a zebra crossing is meant for the safety of pedestrians & wearing helmet while riding a bike is meant for safety of the rider.

BODY

While following the traffic signals, there are a few things that one should keep in mind. While stopping on a red
light, one should make sure to stop well before the zebra crossing, even though the signal turned green, don’t accelerate instantly. A flashing red signal is a strict indication to stop, while a flashing orange light directs to proceed with caution.People’s reluctance to follow traffic rules could be attributed to various factors. There is no organized road safety education in the Indian system. People disobeying traffic rules are seldom confronted, thus making them more reluctant. But now Post imposition of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 has increased the penalties for traffic rule violations. Under the amended Act, violations such as drunken driving at driving attract a fine of Rs 10,000.

CONCLUSION

Penalty for driving without a licence was increased from fine up to Rs 500 to fine of Rs 5,000. Not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler can now lead to a fine Rs 1,000 and disqualification for licences for three months.

Such reforms in our vehicle act must be welcomed by the citizens who really want the progress of the country. This will also reduce road accidents and ensure the safety of the road users.

Traffic rules and regulations are formulated to regulate traffic, for the safety and convenience. They are very essential to ensure safety on road as well as their users . Whether it is from a vehicle or a pedestrian. Sometimes road accidents are so dangerous that many people die from it. All these accidents are due to nealigence of the people.

With the increase in population, the amount of traffic is naturally increasing. Big cities are becoming bigger and more crowded. Life has become very fast. Everybody seems to be in a hurry. Drivers of vehicle use their strength at the accelerator in order to reach their destination as soon as possible. Due to overspeeding, there has been a great
increase in accidents.

There are some other reasons also that has led to rise in the number of accidents. People have now become less tolerant. They lack self discipline. A driver with a bigger vehicle takes it as a challenge if someone with a smaller one overtakes him. Then a race begins between the two, and the natural result is a serious accident. Road safety risks have also increased because of the driver distraction due to the use of cell- phone or other electronic devices while driving

Due to the fast pace of life, we remam under stress all the time. There is stress due to famihy issues. There is stress due to work- relatedd issues and then, there is the climatic effect also. In hot countries like India, people are prone to
have a hot temper. Another reason for rise in accident is that there are no stringent penalties for those who break the traffic rules. In the absence of severe penalties, people ignore traffic rules at their will.

Pedestrains cause accidents by their careless crossing of roads and by jaywalking. More school- going children
have bicycles for use, but often they behave very irresponsibly on the road. They forget that the bicycle is subject to the same rule of the road as the motor vehicles. A careless cyclist can cause as big an accident as a careless motor-driver.

The cure of each ill lies in removing the causes. Therefore, we should avoid road rage and be disciplined motorists. We should know the traffic rules and be courteous to fellow drivers. lf we have an appointment, we should start well
in time. We should avoid using cellphones while driving. We shouldn’t carry any stress while driving. Every road-user should follow the rules of the road. Pedestrians, cyclists, rickshaw pullers and vehicle-drivers all must have knowledge of these rules and should obey them.
